Warning: Emails misusing the name of Simon Piper and DMH Stallard LLP

Emails have been sent, falsely claiming to be from Simon Piper at DMH Stallard LLP in relation to an abandoned financial investment.

What is the scam?

The SRA has been informed that emails have been sent to members of the public, falsely claiming to be from Simon Piper of DMH Stallard LLP.

The emails relate to a deceased individual who supposedly had an abandoned financial investment, and attempts to contact any members of immediate or extended family.  The name of the deceased is tailored to match the recipient of the email. 

The emails seen by the SRA appear to have been sent from the email address: “simonipiper@hotmail.com.”

The email includes the name of Simon Piper and the address of DMH Stallard LLP (see below).

Is there a genuine firm or person?

DMH Stallard LLP is a genuine firm which is authorised and regulated by the SRA.

The firm's genuine address is Gainsborough House Pegler Way, Crawley RH11 7FZ.

Simon Piper is a Senior Conveyancer at DMH Stallard LLP.

Both the genuine firm DMH Stallard LLP and Simon Piper, who works at that firm, have confirmed that they have no connection to the email referred to above.

What should I do?

When a firm's or individual's identity has been copied exactly (or cloned), due diligence is necessary. If you receive correspondence claiming to be from the above firm(s) or individual(s), or information of a similar nature to that described, you should conduct your own due diligence by checking the authenticity of the correspondence by contacting the law firm directly by reliable and established means. You can contact the SRA to find out if individuals or firms are regulated and authorised by the SRA and verify an individual's or firm's practising details. Other verification methods, such as checking public records (e.g. telephone directories and company records) may be required in other circumstances.
