Warning: Correspondence from “Dowd & Co” of London WC2A 1AL, misusing a genuine SRA ID number

A letter has been sent from “Dowd & Co”, claiming to be a law firm from London, misusing the SRA ID (561149) of a genuine firm of solicitors.

What is the scam?

The SRA has received a report that a letter has been sent to a member of the public, claiming to be from “Dowd & Co” and misusing the SRA ID (561149) of a genuine firm of solicitors.

The letter claims to have been sent by “Timothy Dowd Esq” and falsely claims that there is a “Dowd & Co” law firm based in London, WC2A 1AL, with an ID number of 561149. The letter includes reference to contact numbers of +44 203 6083990 (telephone) and +44 203 6083990 (fax), and a supposed website address of

The SRA does not authorise or regulate a firm of solicitors called “Dowd & Co”.
The SRA does not authorise or regulate an individual solicitor by the name of Timothy Dowd.

Any business or transactions through Timothy Dowd using the contact details above, are not undertaken by a solicitor’s practice or an individual authorised and regulated by the SRA.

Is there a genuine firm or person?

The SRA does authorise and regulate a genuine firm called Hilary Meredith Solicitors Ltd, whose genuine SRA ID is 561149.


What should I do?

When a firm's or individual's identity has been copied exactly (or cloned), due diligence is necessary. If you receive correspondence claiming to be from the above firm(s) or individual(s), or information of a similar nature to that described, you should conduct your own due diligence by checking the authenticity of the correspondence by contacting the law firm directly by reliable and established means.
