Warning: Emails misusing the name Molesworths Bright Clegg

Emails have been sent, falsely claiming to be from Molesworths Bright Clegg, containing an attachment.

What is the scam?

Emails have been sent to Law firms, falsely claiming to be from Paul Dixon of Molesworths Bright Clegg, containing an attached ‘Payment Invoice’.

A concern is that the attachment contains a virus or malware if opened.

The email misuses the telephone number, fax number and address of a genuine solicitors (see below)

The email seen by the SRA appears to have been sent from a genuine email address of a genuine solicitor (see below).

Is there a genuine firm or person?

The SRA authorises and regulates a genuine firm of solicitors Molesworths Bright Clegg. The SRA also authorises and regulates a number of genuine solicitors called Paul Dixon, one of whom is a partner at the genuine firm of Molesworths Bright Clegg.

The genuine email address for Paul Dixon at Molesworths Bright Clegg is PDixon@Molesworths.co.uk

The genuine telephone number for the genuine firm of Molesworths Bright Clegg is 01706 356666 and its genuine fax number is 01706 354681.

Both the genuine firm Molesworths Bright Clegg and genuine Paul Dixon who works at that firm, have confirmed that they have no connection to the emails referred to above.

What should I do?

When a firm's or individual's identity has been copied exactly (or cloned), due diligence is necessary. If you receive correspondence claiming to be from the above firm(s) or individual(s), or information of a similar nature to that described, you should conduct your own due diligence by checking the authenticity of the correspondence by contacting the law firm directly by reliable and established means. You can contact the SRA to find out if individuals or firms are regulated and authorised by the SRA and verify an individual's or firm's practising details. Other verification methods, such as checking public records (e.g. telephone directories and company records) may be required in other circumstances.
