Costs involved in a legal matter

Costs

There can be several different costs involved in a legal matter. Solicitors must give their clients the best possible information about costs. You may want to ask your solicitor some of the questions below, to make sure you have a good understanding of what costs are involved:

  • Does any estimate include VAT?
  • What other costs might I be responsible for?
  • Is there a possibility that I will need to pay the other side's costs?
  • How often will you tell me what my current costs are?
  • How will you contact me to update me on my costs?

Communicating with your solicitor

It is important that your solicitor understands what you are expecting of them. Before you instruct a solicitor, think about what your objectives are and what you want from your solicitor. It may be useful to ask your solicitor some of the questions below:

  • Will you keep me updated by phone, letter, email or all three?
  • How often will you contact me?
  • Who do I speak to if my solicitor is on holiday?
  • What do I do if I have any additional concerns about my matter?
