Indicative practising fees for 2017/18 have now been agreed. These contribute to the costs of running the SRA, the Law Society, Legal Services Board, Legal Ombudsman and Solicitors Disciplinary Tribunal.

Significant public losses, as a result of solicitors' involvement in fraudulent schemes, may lead to an increase in high value claims on the Compensation Fund. So to make sure there is sufficient funding, contributions are increasing for the first time in three years.

For more about practising fees and Compensation Fund contributions, and to use our fees calculator, see our information about fees.

Please be aware that the fees should be treated as indicative pending final sign-off by the Legal Services Board.

Continuing competence requirements

From 1 November 2016, solicitors no longer needed to count CPD hours and instead have adopted the new approach to continuing competence. This means reflecting on the quality of their practice and identifying any learning and development needs.

As part of the renewal application, all solicitors will need to declare that they have done this for the past year (1 November 2016 to 31 October 2017).
