Terms and conditions of the licence

The general conditions which apply to licensed bodies contained in Rule 8 of the SRA Authorisation Rules for Legal Services Bodies and Licensable Bodies as applicable.

Any obligation which may from time to time be imposed on the firm or a manager, employee, or non-authorised interest-holder in the firm by or under the SRA's licensing rules or by or under the LSA, or any other enactment

The firm may carry on exempt regulated activities under Part XX of the Financial Services and Markets Act 2000 provided that such activities arise out of or are complementary to the firm’s reserved legal activities or other legal activities.

A conditional licence is granted to Co-operative Legal Services Limited ('CLS') subject to the following conditions:

  • a) The Co-operative Trust Corporation ('CTC') should not display any wording or logo that it is associated with CLS.
  • b) The CTC will not give any indication it is authorised by the SRA in any way.
  • c) The CTC will not be held out to the public and will only be used as a corporate trustee for clients of CLS.
  • d) The CTC will not undertake any legal work for any person.
  • e) If the Ownership of the CTC changes within a period of 2 years the licensed body - Co-operative Legal Services Ltd - must advise the SRA as soon as such change is known to its governing body. 

Waiver(s)

The information below is a summary of the waiver(s) granted.

  1. A waiver of SRA Authorisation Rules for Legal Services Bodies and Licensable Bodies 2011, Rule 8.6(a)(ii), such that 19 directors of the Co -operative Group Board can complete the full approval process as managers of Co-operative Legal Services Limited within four weeks from the date on which the licence takes effect
  2. A waiver to Outcome 12.2 of the SRA Code of Conduct 2011, such that Co-operative Legal Services Limited will be allowed to continue to operate its Co-operative Trust Corporation to allow the trust company to continue to act as executor, subject to conditions, for a period of three years from the date on which the licence takes effect
  3. A waiver to Outcomes 1.15 and 9.4 of the SRA Code of Conduct 2011 to allow ongoing cases being conducted by Co-operative Trust Corporation to continue on their existing terms of business for a period of 12 months from the date on which the licence takes effect
