How to apply

There are different forms to complete depending on the type of application.

Form RF3 application for a practising certificate

Who must apply

The Solicitors Act 1974 requires practising solicitors to have a practising certificate. Rule 9 of the Practice Framework Rules 2011 sets out what we regards as "practising"—and the guidance to rule 9 discusses exemptions from the requirement to hold a practising certificate.

Form RF6 application to register as a registered European lawyer (REL)

Who must apply

European lawyers who wish to practise in England and Wales must register with the SRA as an REL (unless registered with another professional body) as set out in the European Communities (Lawyer's Practice) Regulations 2000.

Form RF5 application to register as a registered foreign lawyer (RFL)

Who must apply

Foreign lawyers who wish to become managers of a recognised body must register with the SRA as an RFL as set out in the Courts and Legal Services Act 1990, section 89 and Schedule 14.

Foreign lawyer non-managers may also voluntarily register themselves with the SRA. See rule 3 of the Practice Framework Rules 2011.

Form REG3 notification of intention to apply for a practising certificate or registration to be an REL

Who must notify

All solicitors and RELs who wish to apply for a practising certificate or registration and who are subject to any of the matters in regulation 3 of the SRA Practising Regulations.
