Roll of solicitors
Each year, we send an annual enquiry (KR1) to all solicitors without a practising certificate and ask whether they wish to keep their name on the roll of solicitors.
Anyone wishing to retain their name on the roll must return their enquiry and fee of £20 to the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) by 2 June 2010.
We do not have the current addresses for a number of solicitors who do not hold a practising certificate.
As required under regulation 3 of the Solicitors (Keeping of the Roll) Regulations 1999, we have written to them at their last notified address.
On 17 March 2010 we will publish a list of these solicitors.
If your name is on this list and you wish to retain your name on the roll of solicitors:
- please contact us and we will update your record and send a KR1 form to you
- send us your completed enquiry and the £20 fee by 2 June 2010.
To aid processing times it would be helpful if applicants could return their KR1 by 5 May 2010.
If you know of someone who wishes to retain their name on the roll and whose name appears on the list, please ask them to contact us as soon as possible.
Under section 5(b) and (c) of the Solicitors (Keeping of the Roll) Regulations 1999, we will remove from the roll the name of any solicitor who does not return their KR1 by the deadline.
On 3 May 2010, we will publish a list detailing the names of the solicitors we intend to remove from the roll. Any solicitor whose name appears on this list will need to contact us to request a KR1.
Please not that no reminders will be sent.
Who may stay on the roll?
Any solicitor who currently does not hold a practising certificate or an exemption from holding a practising certificate may stay on the roll.
The Solicitors Act 1974 requires practising solicitors to have a practising certificate. Subrule 20.01 of the Code of Conduct sets out what we regard as "practising".
Fees and exemptions
Staying on the roll costs £20 a year. There are a variety of ways to pay. We will refund your fee if you return to practice during the current practising year, which runs from 1 November 2009 to 31 October 2010.
If you have been on the roll for fifty years or more, we do not charge.
