Staying on the roll
Each year, we send an annual enquiry (KR1) to each solicitor without a practising certificate and ask whether they wish to keep their name on the roll of solicitors. We are required to do this under the Solicitors (Keeping of the Roll) Regulations 1999.
Those who do not apply to stay on the roll are removed. We publish a list of solicitors removed from the roll (PDF 217K). Note that removal from the roll is not the same as being struck off.
Who may stay on the roll?
Any solicitor who currently does not hold a practising certificate or an exemption from holding a practising certificate may stay on the roll.
The Solicitors Act 1974 requires practising solicitors to have a practising certificate. Subrule 20.01 of the Code of Conduct sets out what we regard as "practising".
Fees and exemptions
Staying on the roll costs £20 a year. There is a variety of ways to pay. We will refund your fee if you return to practice during the current practising year, which runs from 1 November 2007 to 31 October 2008.
If you have been on the roll for fifty years or more, we do not charge.
How to complete KR1
If any of the information has changed, please strike it out with a single line and write the correct information next to it. Please do not use liquid paper.
