Exemption from QLTT heads
Applications made under regulations 5, 6, 8, 9 and 10 of the Qualified Lawyers Transfer Regulations
The schedule to the Qualified Lawyers Transfer Regulations (QLTR) sets out the heads of the Qualified Lawyers Transfer Test (QLTT) that you will need to pass before you can qualify as a solicitor in England and Wales. The schedule is based on a comparison of the law and qualification in (a) your home jurisdiction, and (b) England and Wales.
If you wish to apply for exemptions from passing the heads of the test that people who hold your qualification are normally required to pass, you will need to show that you passed an examination or other formal assessment within the previous five years that covered the knowledge of the areas covered by the particular head of the test. The specification for the test (PDF 13 pages, 72K) is published by the SRA.
If you are seeking an exemption from a specific head of the test, you should provide details of when and how you have demonstrated your knowledge of the areas of law and practice covered by the test. You should recognise that the QLTT is assessing knowledge of law and practice in England and Wales. If you are relying on your previous success in an examination/assessment that covered the same areas of law and practice, you should provide the following with your application:
- an original or certificate copy of the award certificate,
- an original or certified copy of the course transcript,
- the course syllabus, and
- a personal statement demonstrating your knowledge of the areas of law and practice covered by the test.
Please be aware that a request for exemption needs to be made with your QLTR application. A request for an exemption will not be considered at a later date.
