SRA Compliance Committee appointments

The Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) has appointed Anu Kapila and Julian Weinberg to its Compliance Committee.

Anu, who qualified in 1992, spent several years practising as a solicitor in commercial litigation practice and subsequently as a sole practitioner.

She also trained as an NLP (neuro linguistic programming) practitioner. As part of her compliance role at IBB Solicitors, Anu has developed a wider interest in how the training and development of solicitors are linked to the way in which the legal profession complies with its regulatory obligations and maintains a quality standard in its work.

Julian has worked in private practice in the field of criminal law since qualifying in 1985. He became a Higher Court Advocate in 2002 and is currently a consultant to a Central London practice.

He became an adjudicator for the SRA in 2008 and also sits on a number of other professional regulatory panels. He is a member of the Legal Services Commission Area Costs Committee, a trustee of the Howard League for Penal Reform, and chairs an education appeal panel.

Compliance Committee Chair Yvonne Brown said of the appointments: "I am delighted to welcome Anu and Julian. Their respective experience of legal practice and compliance will bring additional depth and experience to the Compliance Committee as we seek to ensure that the new Solicitors' Handbook meets the objectives of the Legal Services Act 2007 and that our compliance systems are robust and fit for purpose."
