SRA reminds firms of their duty to comply with Diversity Data Collection

The Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) will be writing to firms next week to remind them of their duty to comply with the annual Diversity Data Collection requirement.

To date, less than 1,000 firms have completed their online reports. This is a regulatory requirement and the SRA is urging firms to:

  • Collect diversity data on their firm's workforce profile
  • Report their aggregated data to the SRA using the new online reporting facility by 31 January 2014, and
  • Publish a summary of the data

In July, the SRA announced that this year firms would be expected to report their workforce diversity data online through mySRA.

The requirement is aligned to Principle 9, which requires all firms and individuals to encourage equality of opportunity and respect for diversity when running their business or carrying out their role. The monitoring of workforce data is one of the indicative behaviours which firms can use to help demonstrate their compliance with Principle 9.

Mehrunnisa Lalani, the SRA’s Director of Inclusion, said: "We would like to see a higher response this year and it is important that firms do not see this as separate to their obligation to comply with Principle 9.

"The online facility has simplified the task this year. In addition we have included a sample questionnaire and guidance on how to complete it; a user guide; and a questions and answers section on our website to help where necessary. So we are urging firms to get their survey done as soon as possible as we will be treating non-compliance seriously this year.

"We will publish the aggregated data of the diversity data collection in 2014."

The SRA recently delivered a webinar to provide more information about the workforce diversity requirement.

A number of third party tools can also help firms to collect their data, including a free online tool by the Law Society.
