SRA Education and Training Committee appointments

The Solicitors Regulation Authority has appointed five external members to its Education and Training Committee.

Committee chair Dr Susan Bews said: "The SRA's Education and Training Committee undertakes a critical function in the setting and development of standards for those delivering legal services, so that members of the public can be assured that they will receive high quality legal advice.

"In 2011 the Committee will be playing a major role in relation to the fundamental review of Legal Education and Training which the SRA, in co-operation with the Bar Standards Board and the Institute of Legal Executives Professional Standards, recently announced. These five members will bring a breadth of expertise to this vital and complex work."

Damian Day is Head of Education & Quality Assurance at the General Pharmaceutical Council. His role includes responsibility for the education and training standards. He has worked as an auditor/adviser for the Quality Assurance Agency, Higher Education and Training Awards Council [Eire], Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Lithuania, Serbia and Croatia. He has also worked on UNESCO/EU university governance and quality assurance projects.

Chitra Karvé is Director of Performance and Development at the Parole Board. Previous roles include Director of Equality and Diversity at London Probation, Head of Enforcement and Public Duty at the Commission for Racial Equality, Ethnic Minorities Human Rights Lawyer at Liberty, and Press and Parliamentary Officer at the Law Centres Federation. She is currently Vice Chair of Action of Southern Africa, the successor body to the Anti-Apartheid Movement.

Louise Meikle is Head of HR and Training at City law firm Slaughter and May, where she is responsible for the recruitment, development and retention of staff and for all training activities for commercial lawyers, including legal training, skills training, SRA compulsory training, language training and online learning. She is a member of the City of London Law Society Training Committee and was a member of the original SRA's Education and Training Committee, being appointed in 2007.

Sheree Peaple is Head of Leicester De Montfort Law School. She has undertaken various consultancy roles for the SRA and Bar Council, including as a Chief External Examiner, Reporting Assessor and Chair of Validation panels for the Legal Practice Course. Until 2007 she was a member of the Legal Practice Course Board of The Law Society, and was appointed to the SRA's Education and Training Committee the same year.

Steven Vaughan is the City Solicitors Educational Trust lecturer at the Law School of Cardiff University. He has previously taught at Bristol University and City University, London. His academic research interests lie in the intersection of business and environmental matters. At the Law School, he teaches company law and tort law and also lectures on the undergraduate environmental law course.
