Nottingham gets a vote on legal questions of trust

Nottingham will be having its say in a major campaign looking into what should happen when solicitors fall short of expected standards.

We are running a national campaign on how seriously real-life cases considered by the regulator should be taken. As part of this campaign, called "A Question of Trust", we are holding an open voting session in Nottingham next Thursday (21 January) for members of the public.

Attendees will use interactive voting equipment to give their feedback on the issues raised at The Old Chemistry Theatre, Nottingham Conference Centre on Burton Street, between 12.30pm and 3.30pm. The cases all explore issues of trust, professional standards and applying good regulation, such as being convicted of drink driving, failing to keep client information confidential, using a client's money without authority or amending a will.

Paul Philip, SRA Chief Executive, said: "We regulate in the public interest, so it's important that we ask the public what really matters to them when using a solicitor and what should happen when things go wrong. We want people to have their say on issues that we tackle every day.

"More than 4,000 people have already had their say and we keen to hear what the people of Nottingham think."

This event is one of around 30 events being held around England and Wales as part of the campaign, which runs until the end of January.

Last July, we surveyed 10,000 solicitors as part of "A Question of Trust" and an online survey is now open to the public and legal professionals on the SRA's website. All feedback gathered during the campaign will help to support future SRA decision making.
