Nearly 28,000 solicitors go online with mySRA

Nearly 28,000 solicitors have now logged on and activated their personal online accounts, in the first phase of the Solicitors Regulation Authority's (SRA) project to bring its application processes online.

Initial teething problems caused some log-on problems when the system was launched on 1 September. These have now been resolved and the authority has apologised to all those who experienced problems.

Chief Executive Officer Antony Townsend, said: "Despite extensive advance testing, it is regrettable that teething problems prevented some members of the profession from being able to activate their accounts immediately and begin to appreciate the significant benefits that mySRA will bring, in terms of time and cost-savings. It will give solicitors greater control over their information, cut down on the amount of time needed to supply the information and will allow them to update their details at a time to suit them, rather than at the same time of year as everyone else.

"I would like to thank colleagues for their patience and apologise for any inconvenience caused. Activating your online account should now be a straightforward process."

mySRA will ultimately see the SRA replacing its existing paper-based application processes with a fully online system, which will give greater control to individuals and firms over the way they manage their information and pay fees.

Account activation codes for mySRA have been sent out to all registered individuals allowing them to log in to activate their account . Those that have mislaid or not received their codes should go to the SRA's website ( and follow the on-screen instructions. They have until 14 October to do this. (Please note: The deadline has subsequently been extended to 31 October.)

The first phase of functionality will allow individuals to update their profiles. A full range of services will then be made available on-line over the coming months, an up-to-date list of which is also available at This should include renewing practising certificates, which the SRA intends to introduce in October.

Until now, solicitors have had to fill in a wide range of forms—some containing the same information—to ensure the SRA has the necessary, up-to-date information on record. These forms arrive at the SRA from practices all over the country at the same time during the annual renewal period.

The new online system will cut down on duplication of information and will enable details to be updated throughout the year, rather than in one go. Solicitors can also use mySRA to submit a broad range of applications to the authority, get instant information about the progress of these applications, and updates on other regulatory processes.

Activating a mySRA account requires answering some security questions based on information the SRA already holds about a practice or individual. Introducing mySRA has been timed to coincide with the launch of outcomes-focused regulation (OFR), which comes into effect on Thursday, 6 October.
