Find a Solicitor scam - update

Solicitor firms are still being targeted by scammers who want to infiltrate your IT systems.

We reported in March that firms had been sent emails through the Law Society’s Find a Solicitor site saying their services were required. After the firms responded, the scammers sent attachments or links to websites.

These attachments and links might have contained malware, which allows the scammers to control or undermine IT systems. Some of the emails related to the sale of a property or the purchase of a business.

While genuine potential clients might indeed send information in this way, law firms should be wary of the risks of malware infecting their IT systems, and take action appropriate to their business. At the time, nearly 500 firms had been contacted in this way through the Law Society’s Find a Solicitor.

We have since received further reports about similar emails being sent to firms. As well as the note in March, we have warned about this in its Risk Outlook and associated papers. and cybercrime remains a priority risk for law firms.
