Legal Services Act progress
Key changes made by the Legal Services Act are due to come into force in the next few months. In preparation for the new forms of practice, potential non-lawyer partners and new firms wanting to set up after March can now apply for approval in anticipation of the changes. There are also two new consultations on how firm-based regulation is developing.

Conflict and confidentiality – changes proposed
The SRA is consulting on proposed changes to rule 3 (conflicts of interest) and rule 4 (duties of confidentiality and disclosure) of the Solicitors' Code of Conduct 2007.

Second pilot for work-based learning
More trainees could get the chance to try the work-based learning pilot in a second wave planned for this summer—this time the plan is to base the intake around candidates with part-time jobs and training contracts.

Providers of new-style LPC authorised
Would-be solicitors will be able to pursue a new type of Legal Practice Course (LPC) from September 2009 with around half of the current training providers, who have been given the green light by the SRA this month. All providers will be validated against the new requirements for courses from 2010, and some will operate their existing courses for the 2009 academic year.
