Trainee minimum salary levels for 2009/10
16 June 2009
Each year we stipulate two minimum salary levels—one for trainees working in Central London and another for trainees working elsewhere in England and Wales. Similarly, we specify two recommended salary levels.
The minimum and recommended trainee salary levels for the 12-month period beginning 1 August 2009 are as follows:
Central London
- Minimum salary – £18,590 pa
- Recommended salary – £19,040 pa
Elsewhere in England and Wales
- Minimum salary – £16,650
- Recommended salary – £16,940 pa
In 2007, following a formal consultation, the SRA Board agreed to continue to stipulate the minimum salary for trainee solicitors, and confirmed that it should be reviewed every year based on the average Retail Price Index (RPI) for the year.
In light of the present economic climate, the SRA Board has agreed a change of approach—in that the RPI at the end of the previous year should be applied to the minimum salary. We intend to review this approach annually, taking into account any changes to the economic conditions affecting the profession, from 2010 onwards.
Therefore, in line with the RPI recorded at the end of the 2008, an increase of 0.9 per cent has been applied in order to determine the minimum and recommended salary levels stated above.
