Countdown to new CPD

By Richard Williams, Policy Associate, 4 May 2016

From November this year, qualified solicitors in England and Wales will no longer count CPD hours. Instead, the new approach means they will reflect on their practice and work and choose training that is right for them and their firm.

We recently carried out a survey to better understand who has adopted the new approach to continuing competence and who hasn’t. The results were encouraging, with almost 50 per cent of respondents saying that they have already taken it up.

Even better, the challenges some firms thought they would faced have not materialised. In fact 64 per cent said they moved over at no extra cost to their business and a third were able to align it with their firm's existing systems. Three quarters said adopting the new approach took just three months or less. Take a look at our infographic to see more results.

Many solicitors are already benefiting from the new approach, for example, tailoring training more closely to individual and business need. Take a look at how one firm have made the move.

However we know that implementation is more challenging for some solicitors and firms. But there is no need to panic just yet: you still have time to think about what you need to do. Our toolkit is available to help both solicitors and law firms and includes advice on planning and recording learning, downloadable templates and more real-life examples.
