Warning: Email claiming to be from "Stuart & Co Solicitors"

The SRA has been informed that an email has been sent which falsely claims to be from "Stuart & Co Solicitors".

What is the scam?

The SRA has been informed that an email has been sent which falsely claims to be from "Stuart & Co Solicitors".

The email claims to relate to the sale of a property and attaches a memorandum of sale, which may contain harmful malware if opened.

The email seen by the SRA was sent from the email address "bencee2022@gmail.com" and claims to be sent from "Benjamin Gozde" who is described as a solicitor.

The email provides a telephone number and fax number for a genuine firm (see below).

Any business or transactions undertaken by "Benjamin Gozde" or through the email address "bencee2022@gmail.com" are not undertaken by a solicitor's practice or an individual authorised and regulated by the SRA.

Is there a genuine firm or person?

Stuart & Co is a genuine firm of solicitors authorised and regulated by the SRA.

The telephone number 0208 887 1360 and the fax number 0208 887 1370 included in the email referred to above are genuine contact details linked to the genuine firm Stuart & Co.

The genuine Stuart & Co have confirmed to the SRA that they have no connection to the email referred to above.

What should I do?

When a firm's or individual's identity has been copied exactly (or cloned), due diligence is necessary. If you receive correspondence claiming to be from the above firm(s) or individual(s), or information of a similar nature to that described, you should conduct your own due diligence by checking the authenticity of the correspondence by contacting the law firm directly by reliable and established means. You can contact the SRA to find out if individuals or firms are regulated and authorised by the SRA and verify an individual's or firm's practising details. Other verification methods, such as checking public records (e.g. telephone directories and company records) may be required in other circumstances.
