Warning: Text messages falsely claiming to be from Birketts LLP

Text messages are understood to have been sent misusing the name of Birketts LLP, asking for payment of outstanding invoices.
What is the scam?
The SRA have been informed that text messages have been sent to members of the public (and an existing client of the genuine firm), falsely claiming to be from the genuine firm of Birketts LLP. We understand the messages asked for payments of outstanding invoices.
Is there a genuine firm or person?
The SRA authorises and regulates a genuine firm of solicitors called Birketts LLP, whose head office address is Providence House, 141-145 Princes Street, Ipswich IP1 1QJ. The firm’s telephone number is 01473 232 300, their fax number is 01473 230 524 and their website is www․birketts․co․uk
The genuine firm have confirmed they have no connection to the texts referred to in the above alert and they never chase payments by text message.
What should I do?
When a firm's or individual's identity has been copied exactly (or cloned), due diligence is necessary. If you receive correspondence claiming to be from the above firm(s) or individual(s), or information of a similar nature to that described, you should conduct your own due diligence by checking the authenticity of the correspondence by contacting the law firm directly by reliable and established means. You can contact the SRA to find out if individuals or firms are regulated and authorised by the SRA and verify an individual's or firm's practising details. Other verification methods, such as checking public records (e.g. telephone directories and company records) may be required in other circumstances.
