Warning: Emails falsely claiming to be from "Rebecca & Co Solicitors" and "Habbort Law LLP"

20 June 2019

Emails are being sent falsely claiming to be from "Rebecca & Co Solicitors" and "Habbort Law LLP" referring to a Revised Sales Contract and Memorandum of Sale.

What is the scam?

Emails are being sent falsely claiming to be from "Rebecca & Co Solicitors" and "Habbort Law LLP" referring to a Revised Sales Contract and Memorandum of Sale.

The emails seen by the SRA are headed "Memorandum of Sales and Revised Contract" and “Revised Sales Contract and Memorandum", and invite the recipient to "view secured message" by clicking on a link in the main body of the email.

The first email appears to be sent 'Rebecca & Co. Solicitors' from the email address 'mac@scbs.org.uk' and the second email appears to be sent from 'Habbort Law LLP' from the email address 'pauline.h@meyersestates.com'.

A concern is that the link may contain malware if opened.

The SRA does not authorise or regulate a firm of solicitors called ‘Rebecca & Co Solicitors’ or 'Habbort Law LLP'.

Any business or transactions through emails using the email addresses referred to above are not undertaken by a firm or solicitor authorised and regulated by the SRA.

What should I do?

When a firm's or individual's identity has been copied exactly (or cloned), due diligence is necessary. If you receive correspondence claiming to be from the above firm(s) or individual(s), or information of a similar nature to that described, you should conduct your own due diligence by checking the authenticity of the correspondence by contacting the law firm directly by reliable and established means. You can contact the SRA to find out if individuals or firms are regulated and authorised by the SRA and verify an individual's or firm's practising details. Other verification methods, such as checking public records (e.g. telephone directories and company records) may be required in other circumstances.
