Warning: "Henry Stowe" is not a genuine firm of solicitors
15 November 2019
The SRA has been informed that people are receiving leaflets and that a website exists for a firm with the name "Henry Stowe". This is not a genuine firm of solicitors.
What is the scam?
The SRA has been advised that a member of the public has received a leaflet claiming to be from "Henry Stowe, Wills & Probate Solicitors".
The leaflet provides an address of "The Coach House, Cross Road, Leamington Spa, CV32 5PB", telephone number "01926 336000", email address "email@example.com" and a website of "www.henrystowe.co.uk". The leaflet and website also state that the firm is "Authorised and regulated by the Solicitors regulation Authority Number: 623047".
The SRA does not authorise and regulate a firm of solicitors with the name "Henry Stowe". Our logo has been misused on both the leaflet seen and the website.
Any business or transactions conducted through "Henry Stowe" or the contact details set out above, are not undertaken by a solicitor’s practice or an individual authorised and regulated by the SRA.
What should I do?
When a firm's or individual's identity has been copied exactly (or cloned), due diligence is necessary. If you receive correspondence claiming to be from the above firm(s) or individual(s), or information of a similar nature to that described, you should conduct your own due diligence by checking the authenticity of the correspondence by contacting the law firm directly by reliable and established means. You can contact the SRA to find out if individuals or firms are regulated and authorised by the SRA and verify an individual's or firm's practising details. Other verification methods, such as checking public records (e.g. telephone directories and company records) may be required in other circumstances.
