Scam alert: "Christian Chiboa Egwe" or "Chris Egwe" is advertising on the internet, falsely claiming to be a solicitor based in Sheffield, United Kingdom.

What is the scam?

The SRA has been informed that "Christian Chiboa Egwe" or "Chris Egwe" is advertising on the internet, falsely claiming to be a solicitor based in Sheffield, United Kingdom.  The SRA has also been informed that the advertisement is offering legal services on a find a solicitor style website.

A member of the public in Finland had stated that he instructed the individual in respect of a legal issue, and  he was sent a fake SRA ‘Practising Certificate for 2018-2019’ with a false SRA identification number of "405369".

Is there a genuine firm or person?

The SRA does not regulate or authorise a solicitor called "Christian Chiboa Egwe" or "Chris Egwe".

Any business or transactions through "Christian Chiboa Egwe" or "Chris Egwe" is not undertaken by a firm of solicitors or by an individual authorised and regulated by the SRA.

What should I do?

When a firm's or individual's identity has been copied exactly (or cloned), due diligence is necessary. If you receive correspondence claiming to be from the above firm(s) or individual(s), or information of a similar nature to that described, you should conduct your own due diligence by checking the authenticity of the correspondence by contacting the law firm directly by reliable and established means. You can contact the SRA to find out if individuals or firms are regulated and authorised by the SRA and verify an individual's or firm's practising details. Other verification methods, such as checking public records (e.g. telephone directories and company records) may be required in other circumstances.
