Emails have been sent falsely claiming to be from "Moreland & Co Solicitors Limited"
What is the scam?
The SRA have been informed that a number of emails were sent, falsely purporting to be from the genuine firm Moreland & Co Solicitors Limited (see below)The SRA have been informed that the bogus emails were sent between 10 – 13 August 2020, misused the name of various genuine employees of the firm and mostly contained attachments.
We further understand that the emails appeared to be copies of historic emails but sent from alternative email addresses. For example, we understand that one of the emails was sent from the address “email@example.com” but that numerous different source email addresses were used, that were not from the genuine firm’s email domain name (see below).
Is there a genuine firm or person?
The SRA authorises and regulates a genuine solicitors practice called Moreland & Co Solicitors Limited. The genuine domain for the firm’s email addresses is “@morelandlaw.co.uk.”
The genuine firm of Moreland & Co Solicitors Limited has confirmed that neither it not its employees has any genuine and intended connection to the emails referred to in the alert above.
What should I do?
When a firm's or individual's identity has been copied exactly (or cloned), due diligence is necessary. If you receive correspondence claiming to be from the above firm(s) or individual(s), or information of a similar nature to that described, you should conduct your own due diligence by checking the authenticity of the correspondence by contacting the law firm directly by reliable and established means. You can contact the SRA to find out if individuals or firms are regulated and authorised by the SRA and verify an individual's or firm's practising details. Other verification methods, such as checking public records (e.g. telephone directories and company records) may be required in other circumstances.
