Warning: Correspondence and website for 'Haman Wong Solicitors LLP'

A letter has been sent falsely claiming to be from 'Haman Wong' of 'Haman Wong Solicitors LLP' in relation to an unclaimed inheritance.

What is the scam?

A letter has been sent to an individual in New York referring to a supposedly unclaimed life insurance policy from someone with the same surname as the recipient of the letter. The letter claims to be from 'Haman Wong' of 'Haman Wong Solicitors LLP'.

The letter seen by the SRA asks  the recipient to help claim the life insurance policy due to the recipient , with the proceeds proposed to be split 45% each to the recipient and the 'Haman Wong' with remainder of the 10% going to charity.

The letter provides an address of '113 Chancery Lane, London, WC2A 1PL', a telephone number of '011 44 20 8123 6312', email addresses of: 'hamanwong52@gmail.com' and 'hamanwong@hamanwongllp.com' and a website address of 'www.hamanwongllp.com'.

The website 'www.hamanwongllp.com' is operating claiming to be for 'Haman Wong Solicitors LLP'. The website gives the same address as above, however, gives another contact number of '+44 203 0971792' and an email address of 'info@hamanwongllp.com'.

The SRA does not authorise or regulate a firm of solicitors called 'Haman Wong Solicitors LLP', nor does it authorise and regulate a solicitor called 'Haman Wong'.

Any business or transaction through 'Haman Wong Solicitors LLP', www.hamanwongllp.com’' the above address and contact details are not undertaken by a solicitors' practice or by an individual authorised and regulated by the SRA.

What should I do?

When a firm's or individual's identity has been copied exactly (or cloned), due diligence is necessary. If you receive correspondence claiming to be from the above firm(s) or individual(s), or information of a similar nature to that described, you should conduct your own due diligence by checking the authenticity of the correspondence by contacting the law firm directly by reliable and established means. You can contact the SRA to find out if individuals or firms are regulated and authorised by the SRA and verify an individual's or firm's practising details. Other verification methods, such as checking public records (e.g. telephone directories and company records) may be required in other circumstances.
