Warning: Fax from 'James Careen Chambers'

A Fax has been sent falsely claiming to be from 'James Careen Jr' of 'James Careen Chambers' in relation to an unclaimed life insurance policy.

What is the scam?

A Fax has been from ' James Careen Jr' in relation to an unclaimed life insurance policy held by a “deceased client'.

The fax seen by the SRA refers to a person who held a 'permanent life insurance policy' with the same surname as the recipient.

The fax uses headed notepaper with the name 'James Careen Chambers Barrister & Solicitors'. The fax provides the postal address of “40 Old Steine, Brighton BN2 3FL', a telephone number of '+44(0)7452378932', a fax number of '+4420350010', email address of “info@jamescareenchambers.com', and a website 'www.jamescareenchambers.com'.

The SRA does not authorise and regulate a genuine firm called James Careen Chambers, nor does it regulate an individual of the name James Careen Jr.

Any business or transactions conducted though “James Careen Chambers”, or the telephone, fax and mobile numbers and email addresses above are not undertaken by a solicitor’s practice or by an individual authorised and regulated by the SRA.

What should I do?

When a firm's or individual's identity has been copied exactly (or cloned), due diligence is necessary. If you receive correspondence claiming to be from the above firm(s) or individual(s), or information of a similar nature to that described, you should conduct your own due diligence by checking the authenticity of the correspondence by contacting the law firm directly by reliable and established means. You can contact the SRA to find out if individuals or firms are regulated and authorised by the SRA and verify an individual's or firm's practising details. Other verification methods, such as checking public records (e.g. telephone directories and company records) may be required in other circumstances.
