Warning: Emails misusing the name of Sandersons Solicitors Limited

Correspondence has been sent misusing the name of S.Spicer of Sandersons Solicitors Ltd

What is the scam?

The SRA understands that emails were sent to members of the public that falsely purported to be from Sharon Spicer of Sandersons Solicitors Ltd.

The emails appeared as if sent from Sharon Spicer’s genuine email address (see below for details) and invited the recipient to click on a link to access a dropbox file for a 'project proposal'.  A concern is that the link may contain malware and should not be accessed.

Is there a genuine firm or person?

The SRA authorises and regulates a genuine firm of solicitors called Sandersons Solicitors Ltd, whose head office is at 17-19 Parliament Street, Hull, HU1 2BH and whose genuine email domain is @sandersonssolicitors.co.uk.

The genuine firm of Sandersons Solicitors Ltd do employ an individual called Sharon Spicer, whose genuine email address is 'sspicer@sandersonssolicitors.co.uk'.

The genuine firm have confirmed that neither the firm or Sharon Spicer had a genuine and intended connection to the emails referred to in the alert above.

What should I do?

When a firm's or individual's identity has been copied exactly (or cloned), due diligence is necessary. If you receive correspondence claiming to be from the above firm(s) or individual(s), or information of a similar nature to that described, you should conduct your own due diligence by checking the authenticity of the correspondence by contacting the law firm directly by reliable and established means. You can contact the SRA to find out if individuals or firms are regulated and authorised by the SRA and verify an individual's or firm's practising details. Other verification methods, such as checking public records (e.g. telephone directories and company records) may be required in other circumstances.
