Warning: Letter misusing the name SCS Solicitors

A letter has been sent misusing the name of SCS Solicitors in relation to suspected benefit fraud.

What is the scam?

We understand that a letter has been sent to a member of the public claiming to be from 'SCS Solicitors' (genuine firm, see below) in relation to suspected benefit fraud.

The letter uses the address 24 Martin Lane London, EC4 0DR and provides a website address at 'www.thesmallclaimsservice.co.uk'

The letter also states that 'Small Claims Solicitors' is a trading name of 'LPC Law Ltd' (genuine firm, see below)

The SRA does authorise and regulate a genuine firm 'LPC Law Limited'. However, the contact details provided above are not those of a solicitors' firm authorised and regulated by the SRA.

Is there a genuine firm or person?

The SRA authorises and regulates a genuine firm of solicitors called LPC Law Ltd (SRA ID: 541619). SCS Law is a trading name for LPC Law Ltd. The firm can be contacted at its genuine office address; 36 Creek Road, Greenwich, London, SE8 3FN.

The website address for the firm is www.lpc-law.co.uk 

The genuine firm of LPC Law Ltd has confirmed that it does not have any connection with the letter referred to in the above alert.

What should I do?

When a firm's or individual's identity has been copied exactly (or cloned), due diligence is necessary. If you receive correspondence claiming to be from the above firm(s) or individual(s), or information of a similar nature to that described, you should conduct your own due diligence by checking the authenticity of the correspondence by contacting the law firm directly by reliable and established means. You can contact the SRA to find out if individuals or firms are regulated and authorised by the SRA and verify an individual's or firm's practising details. Other verification methods, such as checking public records (e.g. telephone directories and company records) may be required in other circumstances.
