The Solicitors' Code of Conduct 2007 has been replaced on the 6 October 2011 by the SRA Code of Conduct 2011 as part of the introduction of outcomes-focused regulation.

The preamble to the Code of Conduct was amended on 31 March 2009 as part of a general updating of the rules to introduce firm-based regulation and legal disciplinary practices as provided for in the Legal Services Act 2007.

Preamble

Rules dated 10 March 2007 commencing 1 July 2007 made under Part II of the Solicitors Act 1974 and section 9 sections 9 and 9A of the Administration of Justice Act 1985 with the concurrence of the Master of the Rolls under that section and under sections 32 and 33A of the Solicitors Act 1974, section 9 of the Administration of Justice Act 1985 and paragraph 16 of Schedule 22 to the Legal Services Act 2007, the concurrence of the Lord Chancellor under paragraph 16 of Schedule 22 to the Legal Services Act 2007 and the approval of the Secretary of State for Constitutional Affairs under Schedule 4 to the Courts and Legal Services Act 1990, regulating the conduct of solicitors and their employees, registered European lawyers and their employees, registered foreign lawyers, and recognised bodies and their managers and employees.

The guidance printed and explanatory introductions issued with these rules is are not mandatory and does do not form part of the Solicitors' Code of Conduct. However, solicitors, and others subject to the rules, who do not follow the guidance may be required to demonstrate how they have nevertheless complied with the rule.
