Warning: Telephone calls misusing the name of TLW Solicitors

6 August 2021

Telephone calls relating to 'pension withdrawals’ have been made, misusing the name of TLW Solicitors.

What is the scam?

The SRA has been advised that telephone calls have been made to members of the public offering assistance with ‘withdrawing money from their pension’. The caller claims to be calling from 'TLW Solicitors' and the recipients of the call are asked to contact the genuine firm (see below).

The SRA has also informed that members of the public have been contacted on Facebook by an individual named ‘Brian’ purporting to be from 'TLW Solicitors'.

The SRA has also seen an exchange of messages that were sent to a member of the public via Whatsap which gives the link to the website of a genuine firm. (see below)

Is there a genuine firm or person?

The SRA authorises and regulates a genuine firm of solicitors called TLW LLP. The telephone number for the genuine firm is 01912931500 and its genuine website is www.tlwsolicitors.co.uk.

The genuine firm of TLW LLP has confirmed that it does not have any connection to the telephone calls referred to in the above alert. It has also confirmed that it does not employ any individual by the name Brian and does not use Whatsapp to liaise with clients or prospective clients.

What should I do?

When a firm's or individual's identity has been copied exactly (or cloned), due diligence is necessary. If you receive correspondence claiming to be from the above firm(s) or individual(s), or information of a similar nature to that described, you should conduct your own due diligence by checking the authenticity of the correspondence by contacting the law firm directly by reliable and established means. You can contact the SRA to find out if individuals or firms are regulated and authorised by the SRA and verify an individual's or firm's practising details. Other verification methods, such as checking public records (e.g. telephone directories and company records) may be required in other circumstances.
