Warning: Emails misusing the name of Rogers & Norton Limited

Emails have been sent misusing the name of Elizabeth Gibson of Rogers & Norton Limited advising the recipients that a 'New RFP has been shared from Robert & Norton'

What is the scam?

We understand that emails have been sent to various individuals falsely claiming to be from Elizabeth Gibson of Rogers & Norton Limited (see below). 

The email seen by the SRA has the subject heading 'New RFP has been shared from Robert & Norton' and requests the recipient to view the attachment. The concern is that the attachment link may request the recipient to provide confidential information. The email appears to have been sent from the genuine email address of the genuine solicitor (see below).

Is there a genuine firm or person?

The SRA authorises and regulates a genuine firm of solicitors called Rogers & Norton Limited.

The SRA also authorises and regulates a number of genuine solicitors called Elizabeth Gibson, one of whom is an Associate Solicitor at the genuine firm Rogers & Norton Limited.  Her genuine email addresses are, eg@rogers-norton.co.uk and elizabeth.gibson@rogers-norton.co.uk.

The genuine firm of Rogers & Norton Limited and Elizabeth Gibson employed there have confirmed they have no connection to the emails referred to in the above alert.

What should I do?

When a firm's or individual's identity has been copied exactly (or cloned), due diligence is necessary. If you receive correspondence claiming to be from the above firm(s) or individual(s), or information of a similar nature to that described, you should conduct your own due diligence by checking the authenticity of the correspondence by contacting the law firm directly by reliable and established means. You can contact the SRA to find out if individuals or firms are regulated and authorised by the SRA and verify an individual's or firm's practising details. Other verification methods, such as checking public records (e.g. telephone directories and company records) may be required in other circumstances.
