Warning: Emails misusing the name of Linklaters LLP
23 November 2022
Emails have been sent falsely claiming to be from Linklaters LLP in relation to unpaid invoices.
What is the scam?
Emails have been sent falsely claiming to be from Linklaters LLP, requesting outstanding invoices to be paid.
The emails were sent using the email domain '@linklaters.uk' (which is not a domain used by the genuine firm).
The email uses false contact details in an attempt to impersonate employees at the genuine firm (see below).
Any business or transactions through email addresses using the domain '@linklaters.uk' and the telephone number +447418600951 is not undertaken by Linklaters LLP or an individual authorised and regulated by the SRA.
Is there a genuine firm or person?
The SRA authorises and regulates a genuine firm of solicitors called Linklaters LLP, whose head office is at One Silk Street, London EC2Y 8HQ. The head office telephone number is 020 7456 2000.
Linklaters LLP only uses the email domain name of '@linklaters.com' (not '.uk').
Linklaters LLP has confirmed that neither the firm nor their employees have a genuine and intended connection to the email correspondence referred to in the above alert.
What should I do?
When a firm's or individual's identity has been copied exactly (or cloned), due diligence is necessary. If you receive correspondence claiming to be from the above firm(s) or individual(s), or information of a similar nature to that described, you should conduct your own due diligence by checking the authenticity of the correspondence by contacting the law firm directly by reliable and established means. You can contact the SRA to find out if individuals or firms are regulated and authorised by the SRA and verify an individual's or firm's practising details. Other verification methods, such as checking public records (eg. telephone directories and company records) may be required in other circumstances.
