A promotional video in relation to a 'proprietary insurance structure' that has been referred to as Advantage Critical Illness has been sent to members of the public misusing the name of Hill Dickinson LLP

What is the scam?

We have been informed about a promotional video in relation to a tax avoidance scheme relating to Advantage Critical Illness and a 'proprietary insurance structure' that has been circulating to members of the public that misuses the name of Hill Dickinson LLP (see below for details of the genuine firm).

The video seen by the SRA claims that Hill Dickinson LLP will:

  • receive the loan funds on behalf of the borrower
  • disperse the funds in accordance with the transaction
  • provide commercial advice and guarantees to ensure the borrower has the confidence to enter the transaction, and
  • review the contracts with the borrower.

Is there a genuine firm or person?

The SRA authorises and regulates a genuine firm called Hill Dickinson LLP. Its head office is at No.1 St. Paul's Square, LIVERPOOL, L3 9SJ.

The genuine firm Hill Dickinson LLP has confirmed that it has no connection to the video and  Advantage Critical Illness or any associated “proprietary insurance structure” referred to in the above alert.

What should I do?

When a firm's or individual's identity has been copied exactly (or cloned), due diligence is necessary. If you receive correspondence claiming to be from the above firm(s) or individual(s), or information of a similar nature to that described, you should conduct your own due diligence by checking the authenticity of the correspondence by contacting the law firm directly by reliable and established means. You can contact the SRA to find out if individuals or firms are regulated and authorised by the SRA and verify an individual's or firm's practising details. Other verification methods, such as checking public records (e.g. telephone directories and company records) may be required in other circumstances.
