Pregnancy and maternity in the workplace
Women who are pregnant or on maternity leave have an additional level of protection in the workplace, as pregnancy and maternity is a protected characteristic under the Equality Act 2010.
In 2019, women made up 49% of all solicitors and 34% of partners in law firms, and although there has been an increase of 10% in the proportion of female partners from 2014 to 2019, this figure remains unrepresentative of the percentage of women working in law firms. We know pregnancy and maternity leave can be a limiting factor in career progression and may impact on the type of law practised or the size of firm worked in.
We want to find out more about the ways law firms support and create inclusive work environments for staff who are pregnant and take maternity leave. If you own or manage a law firm, please take our short anonymous survey and help us find out more about what your firm does in this area.
