Warning: Website misusing the name of TLW Solicitors

20 August 2021

A website is operating falsely claiming to refer work to TLW Solicitors.

What is the scam?

The SRA has been advised that the website, 'www.refund.solar' is falsely claiming to have a referral arrangement with TLW Solicitors. The website appears to be advertising for solar panel miss-selling claims and suggests that TLW Solicitors will be the firm who work is referred to.

The website also misuses a genuine video of an individual at the genuine firm.

Is there a genuine firm or person?

The SRA authorises and regulates a genuine firm of solicitors called TLW LLP, trading as TLW Solicitors. Its genuine website is https://www.tlwsolicitors.co.uk/.

The SRA also authorises and regulated a genuine solicitor called Peter McKenna who is a partner at the genuine firm

The genuine firm of TLW Solicitors has confirmed that neither it nor its Peter McKenna, have any connection to the website referred to in the above alert.

What should I do?

When a firm's or individual's identity has been copied exactly (or cloned), due diligence is necessary. If you receive correspondence claiming to be from the above firm(s) or individual(s), or information of a similar nature to that described, you should conduct your own due diligence by checking the authenticity of the correspondence by contacting the law firm directly by reliable and established means. You can contact the SRA to find out if individuals or firms are regulated and authorised by the SRA and verify an individual's or firm's practising details. Other verification methods, such as checking public records (e.g. telephone directories and company records) may be required in other circumstances.
