Warning: Verification stamps misusing the name of MMR Legal Limited

10 May 2021

Verification stamps have been used, falsely claiming to be from MMR Legal Limited in respect of a property purchase.

What is the scam?

The SRA has been informed that a stamp claiming to be from a genuine firm of solicitors has been used to verify documents in respect of a property purchase.

The stamp displays the genuine firm’s name, SRA ID number, and address but gives a telephone number of '0121 330 1097' which is different to that of the genuine firm (see below).

Is there a genuine firm or person?

MMR Legal Limited of 1 St Pauls Square, Birmingham, B3 1QU is a genuine law firm authorised and regulated by the SRA. MMR Legal Limited uses a trading name of Reid & Co Solicitors.

MMR Legal Limited’s telephone number is 0121 233 1333.

The stamp referred to above is not the stamp of the genuine firm and the genuine firm has confirmed that it has no connection to the stamp.

What should I do?

When a firm's or individual's identity has been copied exactly (or cloned), due diligence is necessary. If you receive correspondence claiming to be from the above firm(s) or individual(s), or information of a similar nature to that described, you should conduct your own due diligence by checking the authenticity of the correspondence by contacting the law firm directly by reliable and established means. You can contact the SRA to find out if individuals or firms are regulated and authorised by the SRA and verify an individual's or firm's practising details. Other verification methods, such as checking public records (e.g. telephone directories and company records) may be required in other circumstances.
