Warning: Letter misusing the name of Rotheras Solicitors LLP
4 January 2023
A letter has been sent to a member of the public claiming to be from Rotheras Solicitors LLP in relation to revoking an eviction notice.
What is the scam?
The SRA has been advised that a letter has been sent to a member of the public in relation to revoking an eviction notice.
The letter seen by the SRA misuses the logo of a genuine firm (see below). The letter is signed by 'Akhter Madeha' who claims to be a 'Seconded Solicitor' and provides the email address 'A.Madeha@rotheras.co.uk'. The letter also provides an address of 'Units 15 & 16, 7 Wenlock Road, London, N1 7SL' and a telephone number of '+44 (0) 20 7226 1199' with the direct dial '88748'.
Any business or transaction through 'Akhter Madeha' or the email address, postal address and telephone number given above is not undertaken by a firm or individual authorised and regulated by the SRA.
Is there a genuine firm or person?
The SRA authorises and regulates a genuine firm called Rotheras Solicitors LLP whose head office address is 2 Kayes Walk, Stoney Street, The Lace Market, Nottingham, NG1 1PZ.
The genuine firm has confirmed that it has no connection to the letter referred to in the above alert and does not employ anyone with the above name.
What should I do?
When a firm's or individual's identity has been copied exactly (or cloned), due diligence is necessary. If you receive correspondence claiming to be from the above firm(s) or individual(s), or information of a similar nature to that described, you should conduct your own due diligence by checking the authenticity of the correspondence by contacting the law firm directly by reliable and established means. You can contact the SRA to find out if individuals or firms are regulated and authorised by the SRA and verify an individual's or firm's practising details. Other verification methods, such as checking public records (e.g. telephone directories and company records) may be required in other circumstances.
