Warning: Stamp misusing the name TWM Solicitors LLP

3 August 2023

An energy company has received documentation purportedly endorsed with a stamp of 'TWM Solicitors LLP' and signature of one of its solicitors

What is the scam?

An energy company has received documentation purportedly endorsed with a stamp of TWM Solicitors LLP misusing the name of a genuine solicitor and firm of solicitors (see below).

The SRA has received a report that an energy company has received copies of documentation purportedly certified with a stamp of 'TWM Solicitors LLP' and the signature of one of its solicitors. The stamp provides a postal address of a previous branch office; 1 Stephendale Yard, Stephendale Road, London, SW6 2LR.

Is there a genuine firm or person?

The SRA authorises and regulates a genuine firm of solicitors called TWM Solicitors LLP. Its head office address is 65 Woodbridge Road, Guildford, GU1 4RD.

The SRA also authorises a solicitor at the genuine firm called Anne Fowler whose SRA ID is 129225.

The genuine firm has confirmed that neither it, nor the genuine Anne Fowler have any connection to the stamp or signature referred to above.

What should I do?

When a firm's or individual's identity has been copied exactly (or cloned), due diligence is necessary. If you receive correspondence claiming to be from the above firm(s) or individual(s), or information of a similar nature to that described, you should conduct your own due diligence by checking the authenticity of the correspondence by contacting the law firm directly by reliable and established means. You can contact the SRA to find out if individuals or firms are regulated and authorised by the SRA and verify an individual's or firm's practising details. Other verification methods, such as checking public records (e.g. telephone directories and company records) may be required in other circumstances.
