Correspondence has been sent misusing the name of My Law Matters.
What is the scam?
Correspondence has been sent falsely claiming to be from a genuine firm of solicitors (see below).
The document misuses the name and address of a genuine firm and a genuine solicitor (see below). The document seen by the SRA refers to the signing of a lease agreement.
The document provides the telephone number '+44 788 3305 610' and the email address ‘Khatibbasharat@proton.me’.
Any business or transactions through telephone number '+44 788 3305 610' and email address 'Khatibbasharat@proton.me' are not undertaken by a firm or individual authorised and regulated by the SRA.
Is there a genuine firm or person?
The SRA authorises and regulates a genuine firm of solicitors called Fentiman Legal Limited and uses the trading name My Law Matters.
The firm's head office address is 2nd Floor, 84 Salop Street, Wolverhampton, WV3 0SR. Its telephone number is 0800 288 9947.
Khatib Basharat is a director at the firm and his genuine email address is khatib.basharat@mylawmatters.co.uk.
The genuine firm has confirmed that neither it, nor the genuine Khatib Basharat have any connection to the correspondence referred to above.
What should I do?
When a firm's or individual's identity has been copied exactly (or cloned), due diligence is necessary. If you receive correspondence claiming to be from the above firm(s) or individual(s), or information of a similar nature to that described, you should conduct your own due diligence by checking the authenticity of the correspondence by contacting the law firm directly by reliable and established means. You can contact the SRA to find out if individuals or firms are regulated and authorised by the SRA and verify an individual's or firm's practising details. Other verification methods, such as checking public records (e.g. telephone directories and company records) may be required in other circumstances.
