Warning: Emails falsely claiming to be from Adam Douglas Legal LLP

Emails have been sent falsely claiming to be from Adam Douglas Legal LLP with a request to transfer money.

What is the scam?

The SRA has been informed that members of the public have received emails falsely claiming to be from Adam Douglas Legal LLP with a request to transfer money. The emails appear to be sent from the email address am@adamdougilas.co.uk (i.e. with an i between the g and the l in the domain name)

The SRA understands that the emails requested funds and provided details of a false bank account with no genuine connection to the genuine firm (see below).

Is there a genuine firm or person?

The SRA authorises and regulates a genuine firm of solicitors called Adam Douglas Legal LLP. Its head office address is Market Place, Alnwick, Northumberland, NE66 1HP and its telephone number is 01665 602363.   All emails from the genuine firm use the domain name '@adamdouglas.co.uk' (i.e. without an i between the g and l in the domain name). Its genuine website is 'www.adam-douglas.co.uk'.

The genuine firm of Adam Douglas Legal LLP has confirmed that it does not have any genuine and intended connection to the emails referred to in the above alert.

What should I do?

When a firm's or individual's identity has been copied exactly (or cloned), due diligence is necessary. If you receive correspondence claiming to be from the above firm(s) or individual(s), or information of a similar nature to that described, you should conduct your own due diligence by checking the authenticity of the correspondence by contacting the law firm directly by reliable and established means. You can contact the SRA to find out if individuals or firms are regulated and authorised by the SRA and verify an individual's or firm's practising details. Other verification methods, such as checking public records (e.g. telephone directories and company records) may be required in other circumstances.
