An email has been sent misusing the name of 'Stevens & Bolton LLP' in relation to a supposed Intellectual Property Copyright Infringement Notice.
What is the scam?
An email has been sent misusing the name of a genuine firm of solicitors (see below) in relation to a supposed Intellectual Property Copyright Infringement Notice.
The email claims the recipient has infringed on a company's intellectual property.
The SRA has been informed that a member of the public has received an email from an individual claiming to be Douglas J. Clark of Stevens & Bolton LLP.
The email which has been sent is concerning an alleged Intellectual Property Copyright Infringement Notice, and the sender advised that the recipient to comply with the steps they have provided within a certain period to avoid formal legal proceedings.
The email was sent using an email address of 'yeziktintero@gmail.com'
Any business or transaction through the email address yeziktintero@gmail.com is not undertaken by a firm or individual authorised and regulated by the SRA.
Is there a genuine firm or person?
The SRA authorises and regulates a genuine firm of solicitors called Stevens & Bolton LLP (SRA ID 401245) whose registered office address is Wey House, Farnham Road, Guildford, Surrey, GU1 4YD. The genuine telephone number is 01483 302 264. The firm genuine email domain is mail@stevens-bolton.com.
The SRA does not register or regulate a solicitor by the name of Douglas J. Clark.
Stevens & Bolton LLP have confirmed they do not have any connection to the email referred to in the above alert.
What should I do?
When a firm's or individual's identity has been copied exactly (or cloned), due diligence is necessary. If you receive correspondence claiming to be from the above firm(s) or individual(s), or information of a similar nature to that described, you should conduct your own due diligence by checking the authenticity of the correspondence by contacting the law firm directly by reliable and established means. You can contact the SRA to find out if individuals or firms are regulated and authorised by the SRA and verify an individual's or firm's practising details. Other verification methods, such as checking public records (e.g. telephone directories and company records) may be required in other circumstances.
