Warning: Emails misusing the name of Boodle Hatfield LLP

Emails has been sent falsely claiming to be from Boodle Hatfield LLP in relation to connection with job postings on a job listing website.

What is the scam?

The SRA has been informed that emails have been sent from an individual called 'Joe Boadley' claiming to be from 'Boodle Hatfield LLP'.

The emails seen by the SRA was sent from the email address of 'joe@boodlehatfieldllp.co.uk'.

The emails misuse the name of a genuine firm of solicitors (see below).

The fraudulent emails request personal data and identification document in connection with the job postings. The SRA understands that the posting itself is fraudulent although is based on real vacancy information extracted from the genuine firm website.

The SRA does not authorise or regulate an individual called 'Joe Boadley'.

Any business or transactions through 'Joe Boadley' or the email address 'joe@boodlehatfieldllp.co.uk' is not undertaken by a firm or individual authorised and regulated by the SRA.

Is there a genuine firm or person?

The SRA authorises and regulates a genuine firm called Boodle Hatfield LLP. The firm’s genuine email domain ends in @boodlehatfield.com.

Boodle Hatfield LLP has confirmed that it does not employ anyone called ‘Joe Boadley’ and that they do not have any connection to the email referred to in the above alert.

What should I do?

When a firm's or individual's identity has been copied exactly (or cloned), due diligence is necessary. If you receive correspondence claiming to be from the above firm(s) or individual(s), or information of a similar nature to that described, you should conduct your own due diligence by checking the authenticity of the correspondence by contacting the law firm directly by reliable and established means. You can contact the SRA to find out if individuals or firms are regulated and authorised by the SRA and verify an individual's or firm's practising details. Other verification methods, such as checking public records (e.g. telephone directories and company records) may be required in other circumstances.
