Warning: Misuse of the name 'Lisa Campbell' purportedly of 'Campbell Solicitors'

Correspondence has been received from Direct Line Group in relation to a small claims notification form in the name of ‘Lisa Campbell’ for ‘Campbell Solicitors’ on behalf of a third party.

What is the scam?

A claim has been submitted by 'Lisa Campbell' (see below) of 'Campbell Solicitors' (see below for details of a genuine firm we regulate using the same name in relation to a Small Claims Notification Form.

The document seen by the SRA is an intelligence report that advises details supplied by 'Lisa Campbell' as 'Campbell Solicitors, Spencers Chambers, 4 Market Place, LE5 1GF', a telephone number '0742472910' and an email address – 'lcampbell@lisacampbell.co.uk'.

Any business or transaction through the above address, telephone number or email address, is not undertaken by a firm or solicitor authorised and regulated by the SRA.

Is there a genuine firm or person?

The SRA authorises and regulates a genuine firm of solicitors called Campbell Solicitors (SRA number 427865). The firm uses the address Waterloo House 6th Floor, 20 Waterloo Street, Birmingham, B2 5TB, the email address lisa@campbell-solicitors.com, and the telephone contact number 0121 270 6343.

The owner of Campbell Solicitors, Lisa Campbell (SRA number 226415), has confirmed that neither she nor the genuine firm have any connection to the above matter.

What should I do?

When a firm's or individual's identity has been copied exactly (or cloned), due diligence is necessary. If you receive correspondence claiming to be from the above firm(s) or individual(s), or information of a similar nature to that described, you should conduct your own due diligence by checking the authenticity of the correspondence by contacting the law firm directly by reliable and established means. You can contact the SRA to find out if individuals or firms are regulated and authorised by the SRA and verify an individual's or firm's practising details. Other verification methods, such as checking public records (e.g. telephone directories and company records) may be required in other circumstances.
