An email has been sent misusing the name and details of Peacock & Co Solicitors Limited and Poole Alcock LLP.

What is the scam?

The SRA has seen an email which has been sent to a member of the public purporting to be from a genuine firm of solicitors (see genuine firm details below) in relation to assisting with a claim.

The email misuses the details of two genuine firms. It misuses the office address and telephone number of one genuine firm, and the name, website address and email address of another. The email seen by the SRA does not contain the sender's email address.

The email is purported to be signed by an individual by the name of 'Marco' alleging to be the secretary to an individual named 'Philip Saunders'.

Both genuine firms whose name and details have been misused have confirmed that they do not employ individuals by the name of 'Philip Saunders' or 'Marco'.

The SRA does not authorise or regulate an individual named 'Philip Saunders'.

Any business or transaction through the individuals referred to above is not undertaken by a firm or individual authorised and regulated by the SRA.

Is there a genuine firm or person?

The SRA authorises and regulates a genuine firm of solicitors called Peacock & Co Solicitors Limited (SRA ID 657411). The Head Office address is 94 High Street, Wimbledon Village, London, SW19 5EG. It also operates an office at Park Place House, 24 Church Street, Epsom KT17 4QB. The genuine telephone number is 0208 944 5290, and the genuine email domain is @peacock-law.co.uk. Its genuine website is www.peacock-law.co.uk.

The SRA authorises and regulates a genuine firm of solicitors called Poole Alcock LLP (SRA ID 8005746). The Head Office address is Minerva House, Gadbrook Way, Gadbrook Park, Rudheath, Northwich, CW9 7RA. The genuine telephone number is 01606 663 989, and the genuine email domain is @poolealcock.co.uk. It also operates an office at 2nd & 3rd Floors, Northgate House, Upper Borough Walls, Bath BA1 1RG, and a general contact number of 0800 470 0331 both which have been misused in the scam email referred to above.

Peacock & Co Solicitors Limited & Poole Alcock LLP have confirmed that they have no connection to the email referred to in the above alert.

The SRA previously authorised a solicitor by the name of Philip Saunders who was struck from the roll in 2017.

What should I do?

When a firm's or individual's identity has been copied exactly (or cloned), due diligence is necessary. If you receive correspondence claiming to be from the above firm(s) or individual(s), or information of a similar nature to that described, you should conduct your own due diligence by checking the authenticity of the correspondence by contacting the law firm directly by reliable and established means. You can contact the SRA to find out if individuals or firms are regulated and authorised by the SRA and verify an individual's or firm's practising details. Other verification methods, such as checking public records (e.g. telephone directories and company records) may be required in other circumstances.
