Warning: Email regarding alleged copyright infringement misusing the name of Skadden Arps Slate Meagher & Flom LLP
16 March 2026
An email has been sent purporting to be from 'Maia Brady' of 'Skadden Arps Slate Meagher & Flom LLP' on behalf of a client in relation to supposed 'Notice of Intellectual Property Rights Violation'.
What is the scam?
The SRA has been informed that an email said to be a 'Copyright compliance notice regarding online content' has been sent to a member of the public purporting to be from a genuine firm of solicitors (see below), which alleges that 'protected content belonging to a client has been used and/or distributed on your website and associated platforms without authorisation'. The email contains a link to a document entitled 'Access Compliance Record (PDF)'. A concern is that the document may contain malware if opened.
The email was sent using an email address of 'noreply@appsheet.com'. The email provides a genuine address and telephone number for the firm (see Below).
The SRA does not authorise or regulate a genuine individual called 'Maia Brady'.
Any business or transactions through the email address 'noreply@appsheet.com' is not undertaken by an individual or firm authorised and regulated by the SRA.
Is there a genuine firm or person?
The SRA authorises and regulates a genuine firm of solicitors called Skadden Arps Slate Meagher & Flom LLP.
The firm also has a New York office with the address 1 Manhattan West, New York, NY 10001, the telephone number +1 212 735 3000 and the email address info@skadden.com.
Skadden Arps Slate Meagher & Flom LLP has confirmed that they do not employ a 'Maia Brady' and that they have no connection to the email above.
What should I do?
When a firm's or individual's identity has been copied exactly (or cloned), due diligence is necessary. If you receive correspondence claiming to be from the above firm(s) or individual(s), or information of a similar nature to that described, you should conduct your own due diligence by checking the authenticity of the correspondence by contacting the law firm directly by reliable and established means. You can contact the SRA to find out if individuals or firms are regulated and authorised by the SRA and verify an individual's or firm's practising details. Other verification methods, such as checking public records (e.g. telephone directories and company records) may be required in other circumstances.
