A letter has been sent from a 'Yasser Malek' misusing the name and details of TMC Solicitors LTD and one of its consultant solicitors, Yasar Malik

What is the scam?

Correspondence has been sent misusing the name and details of a genuine firm and solicitor (see details below), in relation to a lease matter.

The SRA has been informed that a member of the public posted into a Facebook group seeking a solicitor who speaks Arabic. An individual then contacted them, claiming to be 'Yasser Malek' of TMC Solicitors LTD, and offered assistance. The subsequent communications took place via WhatsApp and email.

The SRA has been informed that a Letter of Authority was sent to the member of public which misused the firm's genuine details, including it's name, address and website. The SRA has seen the signed version returned by the member of the public, which indicates that such a document had been issued by 'Yasser Malek'.

The SRA has also been informed that the fraudster used the TMC logo on an unrelated WhatsApp number, provided personal bank details, and issued a fake receipt for a £500 payment. In addition, the SRA has seen a fake business card supplied to another member of the public for 'Lawyer Yasser Malik', which displayed false WhatsApp contact numbers alongside the genuine firm's name and address.

The SRA has been informed the telephone numbers used are +447863230723 and +447939860266.

The email address used is setannid@meruado.uk.

The SRA does not authorise or regulate a solicitor named 'Yasser Malek'. Any business or transaction through the details listed above is not undertaken by a firm or individual authorised and regulated by the SRA.

Is there a genuine firm or person?

The SRA authorises and regulates a genuine firm of solicitors called TMC Solicitors LTD (SRA ID 636580). The genuine firm uses the email domain @tmcsolicitors.co.uk and their head office address is 4 Central Buildings, Kingsway, Manchester, M19 1SP.

The genuine firm TMC Solicitors LTD has confirmed that they do not have any connection to the details referred to in the above alert and it does not employ a member of staff called 'Yasser Malek'.

The SRA authorises and regulates a genuine solicitor called Yasar Malik (SRA ID 488888) who is an employee of TMC Solicitors LTD. Yasar Malik has confirmed that they do not have any connection to the details referred to in the above alert.

What should I do?

When a firm's or individual's identity has been copied exactly (or cloned), due diligence is necessary. If you receive correspondence claiming to be from the above firm(s) or individual(s), or information of a similar nature to that described, you should conduct your own due diligence by checking the authenticity of the correspondence by contacting the law firm directly by reliable and established means. You can contact the SRA to find out if individuals or firms are regulated and authorised by the SRA and verify an individual's or firm's practising details. Other verification methods, such as checking public records (e.g. telephone directories and company records) may be required in other circumstances.
