Avoid estate administration complaints highlighted by LeO

The Legal Ombudsman is publishing a series of articles to shine a spotlight on the common themes and trends seen within the complaints it receives.

Each article within the series will address an issue that impacts customers and the legal sector, and provide tips on good practice, together with guidance about how to handle complaints.

The latest article looks at responding to requests from beneficiaries during the administration of estates. Last year there were around 11,000 attempts to block probate an increase of more than 50 per cent since 2019. Wills and probate complaints made to the Ombudsman rose 28 per cent in 2024/25

Key topics covered include:

  • Legal status and the emotional connection of parties involved in probate.
  • Managing costs and the role of effective communication.
  • Practical steps service providers can take to improve complaint handling.

These resources reflect LeO's ongoing commitment to share more of its insight and support the sector to make improvements which make sure clients receive fair, timely, and transparent resolutions.
