Law firms and solicitors now allowed to work in India
05 August 2025
The Bar Council of India (BCI) recently changed their rules and now allow solicitors and law firms to provide services by establishing an office in India.
Opening an office in India
A law firm, whether structured as an LLP or company, can establish an office, branch, subsidiary or joint venture in India. From that office, it may provide non-litigious legal services, including international arbitration seated in India, to both Indian and foreign clients.
Firms who want to establish themselves in India will need to register with the BCI and provide the following from us:
- a letter of regulatory standing
- a letter of reciprocity
- certificates of good standing for each solicitor intending to register as foreign lawyers.
Find out how to apply for the letters and certificates.
Firms should also check how the SRA Overseas and Cross-border Practice Rules may also apply.
