Emails have been sent misusing the name of CMS Cameron McKenna Nabarro Olswang LLP and Steven McCorney.
What is the scam?
The SRA understands that emails have been sent misusing the name of a genuine firm of solicitors and individual (see below).
The SRA has been informed that emails have been sent by an individual purportedly offering to help recover lost money.
The emails were sent from the email addresses 'stevencorney@cmsllplondon.co.uk', and 'stevencorney5@gmail.com'. It is understood that there may have also been related telephone calls using the following phone numbers '+27823387870', '+27824788400' and '+44 20 3868 7838'.
Any business or transaction undertaken using the email address 'stevencorney@cmsllplondon.co.uk', and stevencorney5@gmail.com, and telephone numbers '+27823387870', '+27824788400' and '+44 20 3868 7838' are not undertaken by a genuine firm or solicitor.
Is there a genuine firm or person?
The SRA authorises and regulates a genuine firm of solicitors called CMS Cameron McKenna Nabarro Olswang LLP which has a head office in London. Its genuine telephone number is 02073673000 and the email domain is @cms-cmno.com.
The SRA also authorises and regulates a solicitor called Steven Corney whose genuine email address is steven.corney@cms-cmno.com. Steven Corney is a Partner at the genuine firm of CMS Cameron McKenna Nabarro Olswang LLP.
The genuine firm has confirmed that neither it nor the genuine Steven Corney have any genuine or intended connection to the email referred to in the above alert.
What should I do?
When a firm's or individual's identity has been copied exactly (or cloned), due diligence is necessary. If you receive correspondence claiming to be from the above firm(s) or individual(s), or information of a similar nature to that described, you should conduct your own due diligence by checking the authenticity of the correspondence by contacting the law firm directly by reliable and established means. You can contact the SRA to find out if individuals or firms are regulated and authorised by the SRA and verify an individual's or firm's practising details. Other verification methods, such as checking public records (e.g. telephone directories and company records) may be required in other circumstances.

The SRA has been advised that contact has also been made via telephone messages, falsely purporting to be Steven Corney and using the telephone number +44 7859 047236.
The genuine firm of CMS Cameron McKenna Nabarro Olswang LLP has confirmed that neither it nor the genuine Steven Corney have any genuine or intended connection to this telephone number.
